The Perks of Being a Bookseller: Part 71

Everyone, I am back.

Oh, so many things have been going on in the last few weeks. I have moved homes (in the snow and the cold of a Michigan winter). I have set up my home (to a 97% unpacked state). And, lo and behold, I handed in a resume here and had an interview the next day.

And, just like that, I am a bookseller at an independent again. Joy of joys!

Bookbug came highly recommended from a friend of mine who had visited it before. It’s a cool small store with a great feeling to it, and I am enjoying myself there already. I think it can become a new book home very easily. I am looking forward to the possibilities of a new challenge.

And also, there have been new books coming into my new life. Feast thine eyes.

I also acquired a copy of Lion Heart by A.C. Gaughen. Oh, and Because You’ll Never Meet Me by Leah Thomas but they didn’t make it into the photo. My bad!

Things in a new home are good, verging on great even. I like the flat and the cats have adjusted (which is always the biggest concern). I am slowly getting used to the area and widening my personal map. It’s a good community, supports the arts, and seems to value creative viewpoints. I think that I will be fine here. My husband has settled into his job and seems to love it. As soon as I find time to paint and work on the manuscript, I’ll be good.

Speaking of the MS, I’m over the middle-point hill. Which makes me feel awesome. Granted, I haven’t put any words on it in about a month but, you know. Moving. I did start rereading it and correcting mistakes from the beginning and, so far, it’s in pretty good shape if I do say so myself. I just need to get back into writing/editing and recently I have been more in a reading mood. I blame the winter. And the cold. And the snow. Did I mention that it snows here way more than it does in Lansing? Lake effect. Yeah, it does things to the weather. So there have been more books read than written, unfortunately. But I think I’m getting back to it.

So, what HAVE I been reading then? Well, the reviews you have seen here recently. Plus, I have been doing more freelance reviews for RT online and the print magazine (yay!). Those should be out soon. I’m in between a bunch of books and starting new ones today. Because, you know, glutton for punishment. I told myself this year I was going to read whatever I want and apparently I want to read ALL OF THE BOOKS!!! Because books. I’m trying to have multiples going for work and for myself as well. So, my new (admittedly insane) plan is to try to vary my reading a little more to be more well-rounded. Ideally, my plan is to have one book of short stories going, one adult book, one middle grade book, one upcoming book (any ARC really), and one already published (read as older) book going at all times. Plus, I need to read more picture books for work than I have in the past.

Yeah… This is easier intellectually speaking than it is in practice. However, I did read Brown Girl Dreaming in a day (review pending) so that was good. I’m trying here.

So, that’s what’s going on with me. How is everyone out there in the rest of the bookworld? What are you reading? What are you looking forward to reading?

Off for now. Talk soon.

I lived in Kalamazoo for 2 years. 1983-1984. Oldest child was born there. I don’t remember the Bookbug bookstore though.
