I took a well deserved break from the two non-ya books I am currently reading to pound through Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi. As a palette cleanser, and a carrot to finish my two more difficult books, I cannot find any fault with it. I absolutely loved this look into Warner’s life and think it’s a must read for Mafi fans.

* Spoilers for those who have not read Shatter Me *

In this short novella we follow Warner through a few days of his life following the climax of Shatter Me (this is considered book 1.5). Warner has been shot by Juliette just before her and Adam’s escape. Unwilling to admit to any weakness, Warner tries to live with the pain, and trauma, of both her disappearance and the gunshot wound. As the PTSD ramps up he finds he cannot escape her. He begins to see her everywhere, to replay their times together. He misses her and vows to get her back, especially once he finds her journal.

It’s short, it’s sweet. It’s a complete must-read, particularly if you are gearing up for Unravel Me. I needed a reminder about what was going on in the world and this is a perfect stopgap for book one (I’m sure I’ll read the books again, I just didn’t want to do it this week). Also, it’s a fascinating look into Warner’s motives and personality. I understand him better going into book two.

5 out of 5 stars.
