Mid Semptember Update

It’s been a while since I updated personally. My life has become a little frantic these days, and my book life has been suffering… and the pile has been taunting me. Frankly, it has become the bloody Tell-Tale Heart, and I’m the over dramatic, unnamed narrator suffering from nerves over its existence. Le sigh.

Mostly I wanted to post because I have found my own book review posts lagging in the last few weeks. I have a couple of outer projects that are strongly to blame for this twofold kerfuffle – one, I have been editing my own manuscript draft which is EATING MY BRAIN. Two is that I have been reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness… and… it’s… dense…. and…. S….L…O….W… and has been consuming much of my time. It’s one of those books that as engrossed as you can be at any given point you can only read about 20 pages an hour. And that is slow. For me. I’ve been reading it for two weeks, and I’m just over halfway through. Groan. I could have read 6 YA books by now. Grrr.

I have noticed something about the editing process and reading this book in tandem – everything that I am currently trying to improve about my book that readers have told me needs to be corrected are things that Harkness does in spades. I have a habit of being over descriptive (act surprised) and over flowery with my prose (ditto). Well, in an effort to sharpen the manuscript up I am cutting out the unnecessaries. And then I am reading Harkness, who clogged up her book with unnecessaries, and she became a NYT bestselling author overnight. It’s a bit disconcerting. It makes me wonder if I am making the right decision. It’s also making me hate my draft. Or I’m just at the point in the writing stage where I hate my draft. Who knows?

In other news, a lot of YA movies are making the rounds on the net these days. I’m sure many of you are as excited over the upcoming Beautiful Creatures movie as I am. Excited is an understatement, I’m beyond geeked. Especially with these images.

– Thomas Mann as Link and Emmy Rossum as Ridley –

– Emmy Rossum gone bad reputation –

– Alden Ehrenreich as Ethan Wate and Alice Englert as Lena Duchaness –
… I can’t wait. I’m going to take the opportunity to reread the entire series pre-film, so don’t be surprised if my review of the upcoming book, Beautiful Redemption, comes a bit late. I want to read them closer to the release date… which is February 13, 2013. And I can’t wait!
There’s news about Leigh Bardugo’s fantastic Shadow and Bone as well – this week it was announced that Dreamworks acquired the rights to the novel, and the producer from the Harry Potter franchise have signed on. While I am curious I am tempering my enthusiasm until there’s a cast involved. We know the ways of movie optioning all too well to get our hopes up.
And finally, the film adaptation of Divergent has a script writer and a release date – March 21, 2014. I’m sure you’ll remember that last month I professionally whinged about Harpercollins pushing off the release date for the third and final book to September 2013. At the time I thought that Veronica Roth might be having problems writing the book, but now I know why they did it – movie release date. They want to have a hardcover out during the release of the film. It’s as simple as that. Now, I am just as dubious of the details surrounding a Divergent film as I am for Shadow and Bone. I need to see a cast before I believe it will actually happen. Until then September 2013 can’t come faster for this impatient girl.
Okay, off to read more TDoW. And tear what’s left of my hair out. Argh. Ta, all.

You know, I never thought about that, as a reason why the 3rd Divergent book was pushed back. It definitely makes sense.

I have only read Beautiful Creature so far but also plan on reading the rest of the series right before the movie comes out. 🙂

I am thrilled to know how many books are going to be a movie! My friends were talking about it lately and I’m just wishing they don’t ruined it!
And yeah, I agree with you about why they’re pushing back the 3rd Divergent book.
I still haven’t read Beutiful creatures, but I’ve heard it’s really good, so I hope I can get it, soon!
Now, I saw you finally finished A Discovery of Witches, too bad it was slow for you.
Happy reading! maybe you’ll find a better book soon!
