The 2011 Newbery Awards and Honors will be announced January 10th, 2011. I’m looking forward to seeing what the committee decides this year, though I don’t think I have read one of the likely contenders for it. Of course I haven’t.
After combing through scores of “Mock” Newbery predictions, these seem to be the titles that are the front-runners. Let’s see is everyone else (and by default, ME!) is right.
Keeper – Kathi Appelt
Mockingjay – Suzanne Collins
Out of My Mind – Sharon M. Draper
Mockingbird – Kathryn Erskine
One Crazy Summer – Rita Williams-Garcia
The Water Seeker – Kimberly Willis Holt
The Boneshaker – Kate Milford
The Dreamer – Pam Munoz Ryan
The Night Fairy – Laura Amy Schlitz
Countdown – Deborah Wiles
The highlighted books are the ones I realistically think have a shot of a win or a nom… based upon what I have read about these books. Countdown has a strike against it because it’s the first of a series and while the ALA board will award series books it is rare. Pam Munoz Ryan has never received a Newbery and she is overdue, in my opinion. One Crazy Summer has all sorts of positive buzz. We shall see.
I’ve added Mockingjay because it was thematically so well done but I don’t think it will win. The series thing, again.
My Caldecott prediction is for Art & Max by David Wiesner. It’s gorgeous, he’s won a few times, and how can you go wrong with painting lizards? It won’t win, but I really want it to.
See you all Monday for the results.
