Author Signing: Rachel Hartman

Last night, I attended an author event in my former book home, Schuler Books. The event was for Rachel Hartman, author of the wonderful book Seraphina and the newly released (and doubly wonderful) Shadow Scale.

It was hard capturing an unblurry photo of Rachel, as she moves around a lot. What you see is the best of the lot.

The event was a blast. Between talking about the realities of publishing, drafts and drafts (and drafts) of the writing process, crushing self-doubt in the face of unexpected success, why Drachomachia was changed to Shadow Scale (and what the final title means to her), music, gender specifics of language (and people) in Porphyry, overtone singing, and all things fantasy, I felt like I knew her by the end of the night. We even got a taste of what overtone singing is by the author herself, which was most entertaining.

The best part was hearing about her current work-in-process. I am very excited over the possibilities of more Rachel Hartman books, true that.

Yours truly with the author at the end of the night.

Suffice it to say, I had a lot of fun in the old haunt. There was a bittersweet moment where I did not want to leave. I miss my people. They are not here, but that is another story.

It was lovely to meet you, Rachel. Keep writing more perfect books.
