The Perks of Being a Bookseller: Part 43

Hello all from the snow-swept depths of Michigan.

Myself and mine are safely ensconced in our home watching the plows attempt to dig everyone out (and mostly just getting stuck). We received eighteen inches of snow so far. Amazing. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that in Michigan.

Other than that, I have books to show you. Here we go, non-snow covered books from the polar vortex.

I’m still getting Christmas presents, and the publishers loads are floating in. So, once again, I am swamped. Act surprised.

I started reading A Mad, Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller. I’m only one chapter in but it’s already reminding me of my own college experience. I studied fine arts, specifically watercolour and printmaking and the book follows a woman who is trying to break into the arts in a man’s world in 1909. All I can say is that not much has changed in one hundred years.

I’m also starting Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin this week. I’m a little intimidated by it. A friend of mine chose it for our book group and she’s been wanting me to read it for five years… and it’s a big brick of a book. So, it’s a bit daunting, but I’m reading it over two months, so that should mete out the daunting factor for a time.

I have SO many books that I have to start prioritizing, and I have no idea how I am going to get everything done. I made lists, I’ve recreated piles, and all I need now is the time. Today won’t be a problem as I have all day to dig myself out, but after this… ugh. And I have all of the contests to catch up on and conclude as well. And a ton of clean up to do on the blog. A month of neglect is showing and I should tackle some of it today while I can. Sigh.

Can we just download books into our brains yet? Like, for real. I think I may need that.

Other than that life is great and 2014 seems swimming with possibilities. And I look forward to it. In the event of the new year I have made a one-word resolution that I may be able to keep up with. This year’s resolution – Create.

I think that this is one that I can keep.

And so I am out to catch up on Downton (no spoilers!) and emails. Safe wishes to all of my Michigan and surrounding area friends. Have fun digging yourself out! To everyone else, happy reading!

What are you reading right now and what are you looking forward to reading?

Definitely an awesome haul this week for you – The Winner’s Curse, Nil, The Rule of Thre3, The Nightmare Dilemma! I just read The Nightmare Affair last month and LOVED it, so now I’m majorly excited for The Nightmare Dilemma!

Still reading my way through 18 volumes of Pandora Hearts, and making slow progress with my textbook. I want to read an actual novel right now but I just can’t find the motivation, so that’s usually the indication that I should just take a manga break and work on half-written reviews. I am starting to eye Erased by Jennifer Rush, though…

And yes, I am in definite need of books we can just download to our brains as well – this needs to be invented, STAT.

I just started THE LOST PLANET… I like it so far! I feel like I’m drowning in review copies too, which is great right now when I have time to read, but I’m going to school full time this semester too, so I’m kind of terrified for when it all starts clashing!

Of course amazing books as always. I hope you can figure out a way to feel less stressed and focus on the enjoyment of it all 🙂 I think your break last month was well worth it since you created a story…so awesome! Stay warm and safe

I see you have The Nightmare Dilemma. I’m super excited to read that because I adored Mindee Arnett’s first book, The Nightmare Affair. That seems like a ton of books to go through. Good luck!
