White Cat was one of my favourite books in 2010. Naturally, I was so geeked to read Black Heart by Holly Black. I love the idea behind this series – illegal magic, shady dealings, grifting, cons, betrayals… it’s oh so good. I received an ARC of the third (and final) book in the series a little while ago and I only now got to it. I’m pretty sure there’s a reason for that and the reason is this – I didn’t want to let this series go. Plain and simple.

Cassel is skirting the edge of two very different worlds – the world of syndicated crime that he has always known and the recruitment of the Licensed Minority Division, which is a new and foreign animal. The LMD want to use his transformation abilities to catch criminals but that puts Cassel into a tough position; the possibility of prosecuting the people he has always loved, including Lila Zacharov. For years he thought he had killed her but now he is faced with the challenge of deserting her forever. Is the possibility of the future worth overcoming the torture of his past?

Cassel is such a great character to follow around in this world. The hidden depths of his soul are just magnificent. I am going to miss him so much… Him and Lila both; their tumultuous romance is one of my favourite plot points in YA these last few years. I really am sorry to see this trilogy go, however the farewell is bittersweet. I can’t complain very much about this series. There are moments where it’s imperfect in execution. However, the imperfections are very much appreciated in the scope of this series. It helps to focus the themes to pinpoint acuity. It reminds you that nothing in this world is perfect and nobody gets everything they want. Not even con artists… not even Cassel.

4 out of 5 stars, for this book and for the entire series. You really should give these a try.
