Review – Divergent

I’m so glad I waited until I was ready, and in the mood, for this book. Veronica Roth’s debut novel, Divergent, is everything you have been hearing about.

And more.

Wow. Am I impressed by this book. So much.

Beatrice was born Abnegation. Many years ago the world divided themselves into different personality groups – Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the kind), Candor (the truthful), Erudite (the intelligent), and Abnegation (the selfless). She is 16 and nearing her choosing ceremony, when she decides if she wants to remain as she always has been or become someone new. At her aptitude tests she obtains an unusual reading; she is Divergent, split three ways between Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. This proves to be a bad result as the mediator immediately changes the results to Abnegation to hide who Beatrice is.

Beatrice must choose her path; who she is, who she will become. Is she strong enough to become what she must be in order to survive?

I could throw the entirety of a thesaurus at this book for words that mean extraordinary but I’m not going to. Suffice it to say it is amazing. I’m so thrilled I got to read this early, and I’m even more thrilled to be able to meet Veronica Roth (who is going to be at the store I work at in June). If I could say one word about the world she has written, and the idea she has set up, it’s this – intense. This book is intense. And one of the best of the year.

5 out of 5 stars. You must read this. It’s going to be huge!
